Christine Flores (born September 26, 1981),1 better known by her stage name Christina Milian, is an American R&B and pop singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actress. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, Milian moved to Los Angeles when she was thirteen years old, desiring to be an actress. By the time she was seventeen, Milian had begun writing songs to help her obtain a recording contract. Milian has released three studio albums, and is currently recording a fourth album, which is due spring 2009.2

Milian's self-titled debut album was released in 2001 and spawned the singles "AM to PM" and "When You Look at Me". Both singles peaked in the top three on the UK Singles Chart. During the release of her debut album, Milian felt that her label was confused as to how they wanted her image to be portrayed. She began recording a new album, but decided to take a break and toured overseas. After a year and a half, Milian resumed work on her second studio album. The album was released in 2004 and was entitled It's About Time, a reference to the amount of time it took her to complete. The album's lead single, "Dip It Low", became Milian's biggest hit to date, peaking at number two in the UK and number five in the United States.

Milian's third studio album, So Amazin' (2006), featured Cool & Dre producing the majority of the album. The album's only single, "Say I", saw moderate commercial success worldwide, as did the album itself. A month after the release of So Amazin', Milian's representative confirmed that she had left the Island Def Jam record label due to "creative differences".3 Later that year, Milian released her first compilation album, titled The Best of Christina Milian. She has signed with MySpace Records, and will release her new album under the label. The album's first single, "Us Against the World", was written by Milian.

Although Milian is best known for her singing career, she originally wanted to be an actress. Milian was cast in her first lead role in Love Don't Cost a Thing, played a main role in Be Cool and the horror film Pulse, and is set to appear in The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, alongside Matthew McConaughey.4 Often compared to Beyoncé Knowles and Jennifer Lopez,56 Milian has been described as a role model,57 and her mother, Carmen, currently manages her musical and theatrical careers.8

Early life

Milian was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, to Cuban parents Don and Carmen Flores.9 Named Christine Flores, Milian changed her name and adopted her mother's maiden name in the hopes of landing a wider range of acting roles.8 The eldest of three sisters, she moved with her family to Waldorf, Maryland soon after her birth.9 Milian was only four-years-old when she showed an interest in show business,10 and when her family realized that she was a talented actor, she became determined to pursue an entertainment career.9 As a child, Milian was "very imaginative and very creative", and watching television and listening to the radio became her life. They inspired her to have fun, and she convinced her parents that she "wanted to be inside the TV", although it took some time to convince them.8 By the time she was nine-years-old, Milian had begun auditioning with local talent agencies,8 shot commercials for Wendy's and Honeycomb, and played the lead role in the musical Annie. Milian's mother noticed her daughter's potential and moved to Los Angeles with her three daughters when Milian was thirteen-years-old. Milian's father stayed in Maryland and divorced her mother soon after the move.9

Milian describes her family as her "everything", and says that although she got along with everyone as a child, she did not have many friends. Acting at a young age, Milian says that "people knew about it. It was the talk. Even the teachers were talking about it."11 When Milian moved to Los Angeles, her only desire was to be an actress. She always wanted to be in the record business, but did not know how to obtain a recording contract. After living in Los Angeles for six months, Milian moved into the same apartment complex as songwriter and producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins. Jerkins heard about Milian from a boy band he was working with and once he heard her sing, they began working together. For a year and a half, Milian went into a studio everyday and worked with Jerkins, which is where she started meeting people in the record business.12 She began writing songs at the age of seventeen because she needed a demo to help her obtain a recording contract. According to Milian, every time she recorded a song, the producer would refuse to give her the demo, or would write lyrics that she did not agree with. She felt that she had to write a song, record a demo, and send it out on her own.7

Music career

Christina Milian, 2000–2002

Milian made her first professional musical appearance on rapper Ja Rule's second studio album Rule 3:36 (2000), performing vocals on the song "Between Me and You".13 The song was released as the album's lead single in 2000, peaking at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100,14 and in the top thirty of the UK Singles Chart.15 Milian co-wrote and performed backing vocals for the track "Play" for Jennifer Lopez's album J. Lo (2001), and co-wrote "Same Ol' Same Ol'", the first single from girl group PYT's debut album PYT (Down with Me) (2001).13 In the following years, she was featured on the track "It's All Gravy", a duet with British rapper Romeo, which was a UK top ten hit;14 provided the theme song for the hit Disney series Kim Possible, "Call Me, Beep Me!";16 and collaborated with Hilary Duff on Duff's Christmas album Santa Claus Lane (2002), with the song "I Heard Santa on the Radio".17

Milian traveled to Sweden and recorded her self-titled debut album without the "platinum production touch" of Irv Gotti, the owner of The Inc. Records.8 Released on October 9, 2001,18 the album peaked at number 23 in the UK, selling a total of 101,986 copies,19 number 36 in the Netherlands, and number 98 in Sweden.20 The album was supposed to be released in the United States in 2001, but because of the September 11 attacks, which occurred two weeks before the release date, the album's release was postponed.5 The album's lead single, "AM to PM", became a worldwide hit, reaching number three in the UK, the top five in Denmark, the top ten in the Netherlands, and the top 30 in Australia and the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.1421 The album's second and final single, "When You Look at Me", was written by Milian. The single was another international hit, reaching number three in the UK and the Netherlands,14 the top ten in Australia, and the top 20 in Denmark and France.22 A music video for the track "Get Away" was filmed in Paris, although it was not officially released as a single.23 Milian believed that the public expected "a certain thing" from her when she first appeared with Ja Rule, however she wanted to record the type of music she was signed to do. She said that "AM to PM" was a "cool record," but it was not what the public expected. Milian approached the executives at her record label, Island Def Jam, and "cussed them all out", telling them that they were not listening to her. She felt that she had gained their respect by explaining that she was serious about her musical career.8

It's About Time, 2003–2005

Milian felt that Def Jam was confused as to how they wanted her image to be portrayed; one second she was young and singing "AM to PM", and next she was a "grown-ass woman" singing "Get Away". She realized that the change confused the audience, and that "nobody was buying it".24 After the international release of her debut album, Milian went back into the recording studio. She felt that music trends were changing so she stopped recording and toured overseas for a year and a half. When she returned to the U.S., she decided not to release her previous album domestically, and started working on a new album.12 To record the album, Milian traveled the world, working with several producers and those who were "hot" at the time.24 The album was produced primarily by Bloodshy & Avant,25 and she recorded songs with "Darkchild",26 Cory Rooney, Warryn Campbell, Bryan-Michael Cox and Polli Paul.27 Milian received writing credit for seven songs on the album,28 which she wrote like a diary.24 The whole album took between six months and a year to produce,29 and she so-titled the album It's About Time because she said "it took so damn long" to complete.12 When promoting the album, Milian said that she was excited because she had matured since her previous album, and it was "nice for people to see this change."30

It's About Time was released on July 13, 2004 in the U.S.28 Milian described it as "more R&B" compared with her "bubble-gum pop" debut album,10 and performed as an opening act on the Usher and Kanye West tour to promote her album.31 The album debuted and peaked at number 14 on the Billboard 200 album chart and number 21 in the UK, selling a total of 382,000 and 63,708 copies respectively,3219 and received a Grammy Award nomination for "Best Contemporary R&B Album" in 2005.33 The album's first single, "Dip It Low", became Milian's biggest hit to date, reaching number two in the UK and number five in the U.S..2734 The single was certified Gold by the RIAA for digital sales,35 and earned a Grammy Award nomination for "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration".33 The album's second and final single, "Whatever U Want", featuring Joe Budden, failed to reprise the success of the lead single but reached the top ten in the UK.36 Milian thought that "Dip It Low" was "more R&B" and had "kind of a club/party kind of vibe" compared to the lead single off her last album, "AM to PM", which was "more of a kiddie kind of thing, very pop".30 The critical response to It's About Time was mixed. The club tracks, most notably "Dip It Low", were praised while the ballads were said to be disappointing.3738 The style and sound of the album was compared to that of Beyoncé Knowles and Jennifer Lopez by several critics.256

So Amazin', 2006–2007

Milian's third studio album, So Amazin', was released on May 16, 2006.39 Milian worked with the music producing duo Cool & Dre on the majority of the production,32 with additional help from Rich Harrison,40 and executive producers Jay-Z and LA Reid.12 Cool & Dre produced ten of the album's eleven tracks,41 which Milian said "made a more consistent, very real and personal album".24 She found a "really great" chemistry with Cool & Dre, and was able to express herself "easier and so much better through their music".7 Marcello "Cool" Valenzano of Cool & Dre said that "we come from an R&B background, and we bringing sic something new to the table, a style we think is hot."40 The album's first single, "Say I", featured rapper Young Jeezy and was released as a single and video, which was shot in Los Angeles and directed by Ray Kay.42 The single saw peak positions of number four in the UK,19 and number 21 in the U.S.43 So Amazin' debuted and peaked at number eleven on the Billboard 200 albums chart,44 selling 54,000 copies in its first week and 163,000 copies in total.4546 Internationally, the album peaked at number 55 on the Swiss Albums Chart, 67 on the UK Albums Chart, and 139 on the France Albums Chart.47 Reviews of So Amazin' were mixed; critics felt that while Milian claimed that she was displaying the various sides of her personality, the album could "only [scratch] the surface of who she really is."4849 "Say I" was praised by several critics, and was described as "instantly rousing" and "intoxicating".4850

In June 2006, Milian's representative confirmed that she had left Island Def Jam weeks after the release of So Amazin'. Both parties said that they decided to end their relationship due to "creative differences", and that it was a mutual decision.3 Despite this, Daily News reported that disappointing album sales were believed to be the main factor. Def Jam was also displeased when Milian refused to take direction from L.A. Reid and record "SOS", which ended up becoming a hit single for label mate Rihanna. Def Jam reportedly blamed Dre from Cool & Dre, who was Milian's boyfriend at the time, for Milian's lack of cooperation.3 Milian hoped to take "Gonna Tell Everybody", the proposed second single, to another label and shoot a video, but was unable to. As for her future, she said that she was "moving on to better things and new things", and was pretty sure where she was going.51 Due to the low sales of So Amazin', Milian released her first compilation album, titled The Best of Christina Milian in 2006.52

Future music, 2008

“ I've been out of the game for one-and-a-half years, and I think I'm long overdue for a comeback, so I'm treating this album like it's my last chance to make an impression. I'm competing with myself and being very detailed. Before, I had a label telling me what direction to go in. Now, it's my choice, so I'm being very particular about it and I'm really excited. â€

—Milian on her new album.46

Milian is working to release her fourth studio album, which is due spring 2009. She signed with MySpace Records, and will release the album under the new label.46 Milian has collaborated with Cool & Dre, J. R. Rotem, The Runners, Danja,53 Madd Scientist, T-Pain, Jim Jonsin and Toby Gad in the studio.46 Milian has said that she wants "a slower process" for her next album, and has expressed interest in working with producer Timbaland.51 Kanye West is the only confirmed guest artist,46 but Rap-Up.com has reported that Pitbull will appear on the album.54 Milian has also hinted at potential collaborative surprises in the future.46 Milian has written most of the songs on the album and said that MySpace "is allowing me to do tons of different things creatively", describing the album as "very feminine, strong and independent".46 Regarding the genre, she said that So Amazin' was "a little more urban-pop", while her new album is "pop-urban-international."54 Milian views the MySpace deal as a chance for a fresh start, and says that she has received "a lot of support from my peers."

The album's first single, "Us Against the World", was written by Milian and produced by Madd Scientist. The single, described as a "cinematic power ballad", premiered via MySpace on October 6, 2008, and was made available by digital download the next day. The album also includes the feel-good "Diamond", "Stay", which Milian compared to an early '90s Madonna ballad, and the Euro-club record "Tug of War".46 Milian has revealed that she will release another single sometime in 2008.55

Non-musical projects

“ I'm kind of happy that I was never the successful actress that went into music. But now that people know me for my music, it's definitely worked out for my acting career. â€

—Milian on the effect her music career has had on her acting career.31

Although Milian is best known for her singing career,31 she originally wanted to be an actress.12 When asked whether she prefers singing or acting, Milian said that "they're both my passion. But, honestly, if I had to choose, it would probably be my music. I love writing. I love listening. I love the challenge of it."12 Milian has also stated that she loves "performing live on the stage ... above all else. It's my favorite."5 Milian's first significant acting role was offered by Disney Channel to join The Mickey Mouse Club, however she did not accept and opted to star as a reporter on Movie Surfers.55 During this time, she had minor roles in several movies and television series, including Sister, Sister, The Steve Harvey Show, Get Real, The Wood (1999) and American Pie (1999).56 Milian was appointed the host of the music series Wannabes on MTV in 2002, where she met director Joseph Kahn. Kahn suggested she audition for a lead role in the film Torque. Her audition was successful and she played a minor role in the film. She was subsequently cast in her first lead role in Love Don't Cost a Thing.9

Milian starred in Be Cool, the sequel to Get Shorty (1995), with John Travolta and Uma Thurman,31 and recorded two songs for its soundtrack.57 She was then cast in a lead role in the horror film Pulse, starring alongside Kristen Bell and Ian Somerhalder. The film was a remake of the Japanese film Kairo (2001), and was adapted by Wes Craven and Ray Wright.58 Filming took place in Romania, which Milian said made for very rough conditions.59 Milian starred as the main character in the Christmas television movie for the ABC Family channel entitled Snowglobe, alongside Lorraine Bracco.60 She was to be a leading character in The CW's new show Eight Days a Week as Olivia, alongside Mario Lopez,61 but The CW decided not to pick up the series due to the Writers Guild of America strike.62 Milian is set to appear in The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,4 Bring It On Cinco,63 and as one of the female leads, Carmen Mendez, in the video game Need for Speed: Undercover.46 E! has also reported that Milian has started to write two books, both targeted for teenage girls. She has stated that she wants to show her female fans the healthy way on how to be happy.64

Personal life

Milian has been described as a role model to young girls, which she says she feels good about. She has said that there are a lot of people who young girls look up to, but "at the end of the day you have to be your own person and love yourself."5 She worked with the Children Uniting Nations charity, in which she was a big sister to foster children,65 and was awarded with a humanitarian award at The Reign music awards from the Elton John AIDS Foundation for being a role model for young children. Milian said, "I've never been rewarded that way and never been acknowledged like that. That was really nice of them, and I was happy I was able to show up for the kids."7 The event was designed by a group of inner city children to raise funding and awareness for HIV and AIDS, as well as prevention education. Milian shared the award with singers Eric West and Mariah Carey,66 and soon after, various media outlets reported that Milian was dating West. Both denied they were dating, and Milian posted on her MySpace that she has no idea who Eric West is.67

After being together for two and a half years, Milian ended her relationship with actor Nick Cannon in the summer of 2005. While filming Pulse in Romania, she attempted to log in to Cannon's mobile account by entering in random passwords. After succeeding with one of the passwords, she was able to read his messages to and from other women with whom he had romantic relationships with. When she returned to the U.S., she told him that she knew he was cheating and broke up with him.68 Cannon revealed that he refused to stay faithful to Milian because their relationship was becoming too much like a "Christian romance".69 Milian is dating Dre from the production group Cool & Dre, who produced the majority of Milian's third studio album, So Amazin'.32 Dre has confirmed the pair are dating, saying that they have "been together for a little bit".70 Milian has said that since Dre is based in Miami, they visit each other frequently and make it work. She has denied that there will be a marriage anytime soon.71
